A step-by-step checklist to complete in the days before your carrier arrives.
A clean car makes existing scratches visible, which protects both you and the carrier. Take timestamped photos of every panel, the roof, the wheels and the odometer in good daylight. This is your single most valuable piece of documentation if a claim is ever needed.
Carriers are licensed to move vehicles, not household goods. Personal items are not covered by cargo insurance, add weight, and can trigger DOT issues at a weigh station. Empty the trunk, glovebox and cabin, and remove toll transponders so you are not billed for the driver's route.
Leave about a quarter tank of fuel — enough to load and drive off, not enough to add unnecessary weight. Check for fluid leaks and mention any you find. Confirm the battery holds a charge and the tires are properly inflated. Disable aftermarket alarms or provide instructions.
Fold in mirrors, retract or remove antennas, and take off bike racks, spoilers and custom exterior accessories that could catch wind. If your car has a removable hardtop or a soft top, secure it fully.
You will need a photo ID and a set of keys for the driver. You do not need the title. Read the bill of lading before signing it — that document is the legal record of your car's condition at pickup.
